Holne, Devon
Historical Description
Holne, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village stands near the river Dart, on the SE border of Dartmoor Forest, 4 miles W of Ashburton station on the G.W.R., and 10 Wof Newton Abbot, with a post office under Ashburton; money order and telegraph office, Ashburton. Acreage of parish, 5101; population, 279. Holne took its name from the Anglo-Saxon Holeyn or Hollen, signifying "holly." The manor belonged formerly to Buckfast Abbey. Holnechace extends considerably into Dartmoor Forest, and belongs to the Dawson family. The scenery within the parish, particularly along the Dart, is highly picturesque and romantic, and offers great attractions to tourists. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter; gross value, a£190 with residence. The church is of the 14th century, and very good; consists of nave, chancel, transepts, and aisles, with embattled tower; and has a carved pulpit, a carved screen, and a rood loft. The late Charles Kingsley was born in the parish in 1819. A stained-glass window was erected to his memory by public subscription in the N transept of the parish church in 1894.
