Pyecombe or Piecombe, Sussex
Historical Description
Pyecombe or Piecombe, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands 2½ miles S by W of Hassocks station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and 5½ N by W of Brighton. It is sheltered on the NE and the SW by the Downs, and has a post office-under Hassocks; money order office, Hassocks; telegraph office, Hurst Pierpoint. Acreage of parish, 2249; population, 353. There is a parish council of five members and a chairman. The manor and much of the land belong to the Crown. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester;. net value, £160 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is old, and there is a very curious leaden font of 1180 date.
