Northchapel, Sussex

Historical Description

Northchapel, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands on a gentle declivity, adjacent to an affluent of the river Arun, 2 miles S of ths boundary with Surrey, 5 SE of Haslemere station on the L. & S.W.R., and 5 NNW of Petworth. It commands a good view of the downs of Sussex and Surrey, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Petworth. Acreage of parish, 3923; population, 742. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor belongs to Lord Leconfield. Broadlands is a seat in the neighbourhood. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; value, £220 with residence. Patron, Lord Leconfield. The church, which has been almost entirely rebuilt, is plain, and has a W tower. There are two alms-houses with £45.
