Hassocks Gate, Sussex
Historical Description
Hassocks Gate, a railway station in Sussex, on thfr L.B. & S.C.R., 45 miles from London, under the South Downs, 1 mile NNE of Clayton Tunnel, and 7 miles N of Brighton. There is a post and money order office under the name of Hassocks (R.S.O.); telegraph office at the railway station. It serves for Hurstperpoint, and for exploration of the rich scenery of the Downs, and is 3 miles NW of Ditch-ling Beacon, the highest point of the South Downs range. The word " Hassock," in the local dialect, signifies a grova or a thick coppice. Near it is a small mission chapel erected in 1885, and a sale of fat cattle is held every alternate Thursday.
