Clayhanger, Devon

Historical Description

Clayhanger or Cleyhanger, a parish in Devonshire, at the boundary with Somerset, 4½ miles E by N of Bampton,. and 1½ mile from Venn Cross station on the G.W.R. It has a post office under Bampton (R.S.O.); money order office,. Ashbrittle. Acreage, 2120; population, 213. There was;i preceptory of the Knights Templars. The living is a rectorv 'in the diocese of Exeter; value, £275. The church is a very ancient edifice, of nave and chancel, with large western tower, and has carved oaken seats and a carved screen.
