Tooting, Upper, or Tooting Bec, Surrey
Historical Description
Tooting, Upper, or Tooting Bec, a chapelry, with a village, in Streatham parish, Surrey, three quarters of a mile SSW of Balham station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and 5½ miles SSW of St Paul's, London. It was constituted in 1855, and it has a post office under London SW. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester. Patron, the Rector of Streatham. The church was built in 1855 at a cost of £6000, and has been three times enlarged. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The Middlesex County Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1841, is a large building in the Elizabethan style.
