The Oaks, Surrey
Historical Description
Oaks, The, a former seat of the Earl of Derby, on Banstead Downs, 4½ miles E by N of Epsom. It was built on the site of an inn by the Hunters' Club; was The place where General Burgoyne wrote his " Maid of the Oaks," and gives name to the Epsom races on the Friday in " Derby week."
