Wetley Bocks, Staffordshire

Historical Description

Wetley Bocks, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Cheddleton parish, Staffordshire. The village is 2 miles SW of Cheddleton station on the North Staffordshire railway, and 5 NW by N of Cheadle. It has a post office under Stoke-on-Trent; money order office, Cheddleton; telegraph office, Bucknall. Fairs are held on 3 May and the Thursday after 23 Oct. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1835, and includes the hamlet of Cellarhead, which is partly in Caverswall parish, and part of the township of Consall; population, 876. Westwood Manor, Rownall Hall, Wetley Abbey, and Consall Hall are chief residences. Wetley Rocks proper form a hilly ridge 150 feet high, and three quarters of a mile long. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; net value, £90 with residence. The church was built in 1834. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
