The Manifold, Staffordshire

Historical Description

Manifold, The, a river of the NE of Staffordshire. It rises near Flash, not far from the meeting-point with Cheshire and Derbyshire, and near the source of the river Dove, under the S side of Axe Edge, and runs about 16 miles south-south-eastward, past Longnor, Warslow, Wetton, and Ham, to the Dove at Thorpe. It traverses richly picturesque scenery, runs some distance underground, and is joined sub-terraneonsly at Wetton by the Hamps.
