Taddington, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Taddington, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish, in Bakewell parish, Derbyshire, 2 miles from Miller's Dale station on the M.R., and 5½ WNW of Bakewell. It has a post and money order office under Buxton; telegraph office, Miller's Dale (R.S.) Acreage, 3008; population of township, 363; of the ecclesiastical parish, 431. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. An ancient British burying-place is on the top of Five Wells Hill. The ecclesiastical parish also comprises Priestcliffe hamlet and the townships of Blackwell and Brushfield. The church was restored in 1889. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £200 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Bakewell. The church is old, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, S porch, and western tower. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and two endowed schools with about £85 and £42 a year.
