Historical Description
Hyson Green, a suburb and ecclesiastical parish in the municipal and parliamentary borough and county of Nottingham, 2 miles from Nottingham station on the G.N.R., L. &N.W.R., and M.K., with apost, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Nottingham. The ecclesiastical parish comprises portions of Eadford and Lenton parishes, and was constituted in 1844. Population, 16, 086. The inhabitants are largely employed in the cotton and silk mills. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value,, £310 with residence. The church, dedicated to St Paul, was built in 1843-44, and is in the Early English style. In 1889 it was enlarged by lengthening the nave eastward, and chancel, organ chamber, clergy and choir vestries were erected. In 1883 a chapel of ease was erected, dedicated to St Simon. There are Baptist, Congregational, United Free Methodist, and Methodist New Connexion chapels. The Bumaby Conservative Club was opened in 1885, and comprises a large lecture hall, and billiard, reading, and reception rooms.
