Nether Heyford or Lower Heyford, Northamptonshire
Historical Description
Heyford, Nether, or Lover Heyford, a village and a parish in Northamptonshire. The village stands near Wat-ling Street, the river None, and the Grand Junction Canal, 2½ miles SE from Weedon station on the L. & N.W.R., and 6 WSW from Northampton, and has a post office, of the name of Nether Heyford, under Weedon; money order office, Bug-brook; telegraph office, Weedon. The parish comprises 1197 acres; population of the civil parish, 773; of the ecclesiastical, 869. A Roman pavement, indicating the site of a Roman villa, was discovered in 1699. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £129. The church is a building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, and contains the tomb of Judge Morgan, who pronounced sentence on Lady Jane Grey, and a brass of 1497. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, an endowed school with £130 a year, and other charities. Stanbridge the scholar and Preston the distinguished Puritan were natives. There are large ironworks, and brick-making is carried on.
