The Ebbw or Ebwy, Monmouthshire

Historical Description

Ebbw or Ebwy, The, a river of Monmouthshire. It rises on the borders of Brecknockshire, in two headstreams, Ebbw Fawr and Ebbw Each, which unite at Crumlin Bridge, goes south by eastward thence to Risca, receives there the Sir-howy, and goes south-eastward thence to a confluence with the Usk, 2¼ miles S of Newport. Its total length of course is about 24 miles. A canal and a railway go close to it from the neighbourhood of Newport to a number of great ironworks far up its valley, and the railway ramifies up the Sirhowy, and up the Ebbw's two headstreams, and connects laterally with the Taff Vale Extension.
