Colney Hatch, Middlesex
Historical Description
Colney-Hatch, a hamlet in Friern-Barnet parish, Middlesex, having a station called New Southgate and Friern-Barnet on the G.N.R., 3½ miles SSE of Barnet. The London County Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1851, is a fine building of brick, with stone decorations, in the Italian style, and was erected at a cost of about £400,000. The building alone covers a space of over 4 acres, and its extensive grounds occupy a space of about 119 acres. It has also a farm of 160 acres. The cost of maintaining the asylum, which has accommodation for above 2000 patients, is about £60,000 per annum.
