Riseholme, Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Riseholme, a parish in Lincolnshire, near Ermine Street, 2½ miles NNE of Lincoln, which is the nearest railway station. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Lincoln. Acreage, 695; population, 79. Riseholme Hall, which was erected about 1837, consists partly of a refaced old mansion, partly of a new edifice; is in the Doric style, with a handsome colonnade; and stands amid prettily-wooded grounds. It was from 1843 to 1885 the palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, but it was sold in 1888 to the Torr family, from whom, with the manor, it passed into the hands of the Toynbee family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £100 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Lincoln. The church was rebuilt by Dr John Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln (1827-53), at his own expense. It is a beautiful building of stone in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel and nave only. It has som& good stained windows. The churchyard contains the grave and monument of Bishop Kaye, as well as those of Bishop Wordsworth. The extra-parochial parts of Grange-de-Lings, now forming a civil parish, are for ecclesiastical purposes connected with Riseholme. Population, 75.
