Leicester Abbey, Leicestershire
Historical Description
Leicester Abbey, formerly an extra-parochial tract, now a ward in the extended boundary of Leicester, in the NW part of the borough. Area, 560 acres; population, 76. The Augustinian abbey, founded in 1143 by Robert Bossu, and noticed in our account of Leicester, stood here; and an extant portion of wall belonging to it retains vestiges of inscriptions worked in bricks. The property, after the dissolution, passed through various hands, and belongs now to the Earl of Dysart. The grounds have been converted into an extensive nursery.
