Historical Description
Tonge-with-HauIgh, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Bolton parish, Lancashire. The township lies 1½ mile NE of Bolton railway station, and is partly in the county borough of Bolton. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) at Haulgh under Bolton. Acreage, 1099; population, 10,735. The Earl of Derby is lord of the manor. Cotton manufacture is carried on, and there are collieries. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1845 under the name of Tonge-cum-Breightmet, and comprises parts of the townships of Breightmet and Harwood. Population, 2370. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £330 with residence. Patron, alternately the Crown and the Bishop. The church is modern, and is situated in Breightmet township. It is in The Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, baptistery, and small tower with spire. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels in Haulgh, and Wesleyan chapels at Tonge Fold and Tonge Moor. Tonge Moor was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1886. Population, 4587. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £306 with residence.
