Peak Forest Canal, Lancashire

Historical Description

Peak Forest Canal, a canal in Lancashire, Cheshire, and Derbyshire, from the Ashton Canal at Dukinfield, southward past Hyde, Woodley, Romiley, Marple, Disly, and New Mills to Bugsworth. The Whaley Bridge branch leaves the main line near Bugsworth and goes southward to Whaley Bridge. It is 15 miles long, was formed in 1800, and was sold in 1846 for an annuity of £9325 to the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway Company.
