Historical Description
Holcombe, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Lancashire. The village stands 1½ mile SW of Ramsbottom, and 3½ miles N by W of Bury, near the river Irwell, has a station, called Holcombe Brook, on the L. & Y.R., and a post office under Manchester; money order and telegraph office, Ramsbottom. The ecclesiastical parish is in Totting-ton Lower End township, and was formed in 1863. Population, 4721. A tower or column to the memory of Sb- Robert Peel stands on Holcombe Moor. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, e£295 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Bury. The church is in the Early Decorated English style, and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and fine spire. There are cotton mills, and rope, twine, iron, and steel works, and stone quarries.
