Grindleton, Lancashire

Historical Description

Grindleton, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Mitton parish, W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands near the river Ribble and the boundary with Lancashire, 1½ mile N of Chatburn railway station, and 3 miles NNE of Clitheroe. It has a post office under Clitheroe; money order and telegraph office, Chatbum. The township includes the village, and comprises 3777 acres; population, 579. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1845, and is more extensive than the township. Population, 736. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; gross value, —£120 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Mitton. The church is a plain modern building, and has a low square tower. There are almshouses for eight widows.
