The Weald, Kent
Historical Description
Weald, The, a great tract in the SW of Kent and the E of Sussex, formerly all forest, and still extensively wooded. Its length is about 40 miles, and its breadth from 10 to 15. Its surface is prevailingly flat, and where cleared and under tillage is fertile, and produces fine crops of wheat, barley, rye, beans, turnips, and clover. The name is Anglo-Saxon, and signifies " wood " or " forest." See KENT and SUSSEX, WEALD
