St Nicholas at Wade, Kent
Historical Description
Nicholas-at-Wade, St, a village and a parish in Kent. The village stands on comparatively high ground, overlooking the marshes of the Stour, 3 miles NE of Grove Ferry station on the S.E.R., and 6½ WSW of Margate. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office. Acreage of the civil parish, 3561; population, 548; of the ecclesiastical, 708. The living is a vicarage, united with Sarre, in the diocese of Canterbury; joint net value, £280 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church was originally a chapel of ease to Reculver; was transferred to the monks of Christchurch, Canterbury, and was rebuilt by them; is partly Norman, partly Early English, partly Decorated English, with interesting features; comprises nave, aisles, and chancel, with a porch and a lofty tower; and was restored in 1876. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
