Newington next Hythe, Kent

Historical Description

Newington-next-Hythe, a village and a parish in Kent. The village stands 2 miles from Shorncliffe station on the S.E.R., and 2½ NE of Hythe. It is a scattered place, amid romantic environs. Post town, Hythe; money order and telegraph office, Cheriton Street. Acreage of the civil parish, 2463; population, 454; of the ecclesiastical, 686. There is a parish council consisting of five members. Beachborough is the seat of the Brockman family. A summer-house is on a hill adjoining Beachborough, is accessible to strangers, and commands very fine and extensive views over land and sea. A vantage-ground on the Downs, about a mile from the village, likewise commands a magnificent view over the marshes to Hastings. There are remains of ancient entrenchments, and Roman coins and pottery have been found. The living is a vicarage in The diocese of Canterbury; gross value, £260 with residence. The church is ancient, consists of nave, aisles, and chancel with a lofty tower, and contains a font, two brasses of 1501, and a brass of a man and three wives of 1522. The pulpit is a handsome carved oak structure, said to have been at one time a covering to the font.
