Kingsdown (Ringwould), Kent
Historical Description
Kingsdown, a village and an ecclesiastical district in Ringwould parish, Kent. The village stands on the coast picturesquely under cliffs, l¼ mile SE of Walmer station on the Dover & Deal Joint railway. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has a lifeboat and boat-house on the beach; there is also a coastguard station. It has a post and money order office under Dover; telegraph office, Ringwould. The ecclesiastical district was constituted in 1850. Population, 437. Traces of an ancient camp, supposed to have been Roman, are in a valley. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury; gross value, £204 with residence. The church and school were built and endowed in 1850 by Mr W. Curling. There is a village reading-room.
