Kilndown, Kent
Historical Description
Kilndown, a large ecclesiastical parish in Goudhurst parish, Kent, situated on a hill, 1½ mile from Goudhnrst station, and 7 miles from Etchingham. It has a post and money order office; telegraph office, Goudhorst railway station. Population, 890. The parish was constituted by Act of Parliament in 1843, out of the original parish of Goudhurst. Bedgebury Park and Finchcox Park are the principal residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury; net value, a£375 with residence. The church, built in 1841, is in the Early English style of architecture, and has a fine peal of six bells. It was gorgeously decorated by the late Mr Beresford Hope. The living was endowed by Marshal Beresford. The schools were built and endowed by the late Viscountess Beresford. There is a library, the gift of Mr Beresford Hope, and a church institute, the gift of a former vicar, the Rev H. Harrison. There is also a Wesleyan chapel in the village.
