Camden Place, Kent

Historical Description

Camden Place, a seat of the Marquis of Camden, in the north-west of Kent, close to Chiselhurst. It was the residence and death-place of Camden the antiquary, and passing to Lord Chancellor Pratt, who was raised to the peerage in 3.765, gave to him his title of Baron Camden of Camden Place. The ex-Emperor Napoleon III. came to reside at Camden Place in 1871 after the termination of the Franco-German War, and died there in 1873.
