Historical Description
Shirley, a vicarage, with a village and four hamlets, in Millbrook parish, Hants, 2 miles from Southampton station on the L. & S.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Southampton. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 9607-a number reduced by about 4000 upon the erection of the parish of St Mark. The town forms an extensive and populous suburb of Southampton. There are a children's hospital, a free dispensary for women and children, a home for aged women, and a sheltering home for girls. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £240 with residence. The church, built in 1836, is a structure of white brick. There are Wesleyan, Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Bible Christian chapels.
