Hythe, Hampshire

Historical Description

Hythe, a village in the civil parish of Fawley, Hants, but constituting a distinct ecclesiastical parish since 1841, when the old chapelry was formed into' a vicarage, and a certain portion of the old parish of Fawley was assigned to it. The village stands on the W side of Southampton water, 4 miles S of Southampton station on the L. & S.W.R., and maintains almost hourly communication with that town by steamer. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Southampton. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 683. A high ground above it commands a beautiful and extensive view. A pier of over 2000 feet in length was constructed in 1879. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value,, £60 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Fawley. There are a Congregational chapel, an Oddfellows' hall, and police station. The church was erected in 1874, and is in the Early English style of architecture.
