Grange, Hampshire

Historical Description

Grange, the seat of Lord Ashburton, in Hants, 3 miles NW of Arlesford. The estate around it belonged to Winchester Abbey; passed to the Henleys and the Drummonds, and was purchased from one of the latter by Lord Ashburton. The first house was built by the Henleys, one of whom was created Earl of Northington, and the present house was built by Inigo Jones; was for some time occupied by the Prince of Wales, afterward George IV.; was greatly altered and enlarged by Lord Ashburton, and has a fine Grecian facade, with grand portico.
