The Blackwater, Essex

Historical Description

Blackwater, The, a river of Essex. It rises 3 miles ESE of Saffron-Walden, and runs past Braintree, Goggleshall, William, and Maldon, to the North Sea at Mersea Island. It makes great folds in its course, yet goes prevailingly south-eastward to Braintree, east by southward thence to Coggleshall, southward thence to Maldon, and east by northward thence to the sea. Its length is about 40 miles, and its last reach, below Maldon, to the length of 10 miles, is estuary of the mean width of 1½ mile. It bears the name of the Pant for some distance below its source, and it receives the Chelmer at Maldon.
