Canonteign, Devon
Historical Description
Canonteign, the seat of Viscount Exmouth, in Devon, on the river Teign, 8 miles SW of Exeter. The mansion is an elegant edifice, erected by the late Viscount, and contains many fine pictures. The previous mansion was built in the time of Elizabeth, was garrisoned for Charles I. and taken by Fairfax, and is now used as a farmhouse. The remains of the hero of Algiers were interred in the neighbouring church of Christow.
