Speedwell, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Speedwell, an abortive mine in High Peak, Derbyshire, 1 mile WSW of Castleton. It descends above 1500 feet, and leads to an enormous natural cavity called the Grand Cavern, seemingly unfathomable, and was excavated during the 18th century at a cost of £14,000, in a vain search for lead.

Transcribed from The Comprehensive Gazetteer of England & Wales, 1894-5
