Eldon or Elden Hole, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Eldon or Elden Hole, a deep perpendicular cavern, about 2 miles from Castleton, in Derbyshire. Lloyd, who published an account of it in 1781, found it to be 186 feet deep. Further explorations in 1873 revealed at this depth a spacious cavern 100 feet across and 70 feet high, with a floor sloping at an angle of 45—, whose roof and walls were covered with splendid stalactites.
