Valle Crucis, Denbighshire

Historical Description

Valle Crucis, an ancient Cistercian abbey in Llantysilio parish, in Denbighshire, in a beautiful dingle, 2 miles NNW of Llangollen. It was founded in 1200 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor, Prince of Powys. The church consisted of a nave of five bays and two aisles, a central tower now destroyed, transepts with ehapels and a chancel. The finest part of the ruins is the west front of the church, with dogtooth ornamentation. On the S side of the church are the remains of the chapterhouse and other monastic buildings.
