The Petteril, Cumberland

Historical Description

Petteril, The, a river of Cumberland. It rises in two headstreams, in Greystoke Park and in the vicinity of Penruddock; runs 5½ miles north-eastward, to a point 2½ miles N by W of Penrith; goes thence, 16 miles north-north-westward, to a confluence with the Eden at Carlisle; and is closely followed, over all these 16 miles, by the Lancaster and Carlisle railway.
