Historical Description
Clifton, Great, a township in Workington parish, Cumberland, on the river Derwent, half a mile from Bridgefoot station on the Whitehaven, Cleator, and Egremont Joint railway, and 2¼ miles E of Workington. It has a post and money order office under Workington. Acreage, 998; population, 960. The ecclesiastical parish of Clifton comprises Great and Little Clifton, and has a population of 1467. There are remains of a market cross. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £169 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Workington. The church is very good. Jeremiah Seed, the divine, was a native.
