Great Corby, Cumberland
Historical Description
Corby, Great, a small village in Wetheral parish, Cumberland, on the river Eden and the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, adjacent to Wetheral railway station, 4¼ miles ESE of Carlisle. It has a post office of the name of Corby under Carlisle; telegraph office, Wetheral. The manor belonged once to the Salkelds, but has long been held by the Howards. Corby Castle, the seat of the Behrens family, was originally a castellated edifice, but is now a plain square mansion, with a Doric portico, finely situated on the edge of a lofty cliff overlooking the Eden, and it contains a portrait of Lord William Howard, " Belted Will;" Titian's Charles V.; and the claymore of " Fergus M'lvor," Major Macdonald.
