Gatescarth, Cumberland

Historical Description

Gatescarth, a farm with wildly picturesque scenery in Cumberland, at the head of Buttermere Vale, under Honieter Crag; 8 miles SW by S of Keswick. Gatescarth, a mountain pass in Westmorland, 1950 feet high, with merely a footpath between the head of Long Sleddale and the head of Mardale, 11¼ miles NNW of Kendal. The descents from it command magnificent views.
