Strata Florida or Caron uwch Clawdd, Cardiganshire

Historical Description

Strata Florida or Caron-uwch-Clawdd, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Tregaron parish, Cardiganshire, 6 miles N of Tregaron. Acreage, 25,098; population, 559. There is a station on the Manchester and Milford railway. Strata Florida Abbey was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1194 by Rhys ap Gruffydd, and destroyed by Henry IV. Till 1887 only a Norman arch of the church was visible, but since that date the ruins have been excavated with great success, revealing many details of what was once a large and beautiful church. The old abbey house is now a farmhouse. The present parish church is a small modern edifice standing within the precincts of the abbey. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St David's; net value, £140.
