Ellesmere Canal, Cheshire

Historical Description

Ellesmere Canal, a canal, chiefly in Shropshire and Cheshire. It commences at Carreghofa in Montgomeryshire, where it connects with the Montgomeryshire Canal, and passes through Llanymynech, Maesbury, and Rednal to Frankton, and thence to Weston; also from the river Dee at Llantisilio through Llangollen and Chirk to Frankton, and thence by Ellesmere and Whitchurch to its junction at Har-leston near Nantwich with the Chester Canal. It extends to 68 miles 48 chains, and is owned by the Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company.
