Historical Description

Hawtrey in the time of Elizabeth, and was then for two years the restrained abode of Lady Jane Grey, and it was held in 1664 by Sir John Eussell, who then married the youngest daughter of Cromwell. It stands in the midst of a "well-wooded park of 718 acres, and is a Tudor edifice chiefly as built by W. Hawtrey, but with a modern south front, and it contains a rich collection of relics of Cromwell, and of personages and events of his times.
