Penybont, Radnorshire

Historical Description

Penybont, a village in LIanbadarn-fawr parish, Radnorshire; on the river Itlion, 7 miles WNW of New Radnor. It has a station on the Central Wales section of the L. & N.W.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office (R.S.O.) The village is a seat of petty sessions, which are held in the Assembly Rooms at the Severn Arms Hotel. Markets are held on Wednesdays, and fairs on the third Friday in March, 13 and 14 May, 5 and 26 Aug., 25 Sept., and 16 and 26 Oct. There is a suspension bridge over the Ithon. Penybont Hall, an old Elizabethan mansion, is the seat of the Severn family. There is a Calvinistic Methodist chapel.
