Sutton, Herefordshire
Historical Description
Sutton, a parish in Herefordshire, on the river Lugg, 1 mile E of Moreton station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford (London and North Western and Great Western Joint) railway, and 4½ miles N of Hereford. It consists of the former parishes of Sutton St Michael and Sutton St Nicholas, which were united for civil purposes in 1876. Acreage, 1504; population, 379. Population of Sutton St Michael ecclesiastical parish, 106; of Sutton St Nicholas, 264. There is a parish council consisting of five members. Sutton St Nicholas has a post and money order office under Hereford; telegraph office, Hereford. A well-preserved Roman camp, called Sntton Walls, is in Sutton St Nicholas parish. It was the site of the palace of Offa, King of Mercia, and was the scene of the murder of Etbelbert, King of the East Angles. The living of Sutton St Nicholas is a rectory, that of Sutton St Michael a vicarage, in the diocese of Hereford; gross value, £146 and £64 respectively. The churches are ancient, and that of St Michael was restored in 1865.
