Rowlstone, Herefordshire

Historical Description

Rowlstone, a village and a parish in Herefordshire, 1½ mile W of Pontrilas station on the G.W.R., and 2½ SSW of Abbeydore. Post town, Pontrilas (R.S.O.) Acreage, 1667; population of the civil parish, 136; of the ecclesiastical, with Llancillo, 196. The living is a vicarage, united with the vicarage of Llancillo, in the diocese of Hereford; net value, £180. The church, dedicated to St Peter, is Early Norman, and was restored in 1865. The doorway and candelabra are noteworthy. Llancillo Church, also dedicated to St Peter, is an ancient building in the Early English style; it was restored in 1895. In the churchyard are the tombs of the Scudamore family.
