Wroxall or Wroxhall, Warwickshire
Historical Description
Wroxall or Wroxhall, a parish in Warwickshire, 3 miles N of Hatton station on the G.W.R., and 6 NW of Warwick. Post town, Warwick; money order and telegraph office, Hatton. Acreage, 1651; population of the civil parish, 167; of the ecclesiastical, 171. A Benedictine priory was founded here in the time of Stephen by Hugh de Hatton, and was given at the dissolution to the Burgoynes. Wroxall Abbey is a modern mansion with which remains of the priory are incorporated. The estate was purchased in 1713 by Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect, who occasionally resided here. The living is a donative in the diocese of Worcester. The church is part of the old priory with a later tower, and contains monuments of the Burgoynes and Wrens, and remains of the ancient stained glass.
