Tanworth, Warwickshire

Historical Description

Tanworth, a village and a parish in Warwickshire. The village stands 4 miles NW of Henley-in-Arden, and 5 SW of Knowle station on the G.W.R.,and has a post and money order office under Birmingham; telegraph office, Hockley Heath. The parish contains the ecclesiastical parish of Salter Street (or Hockley Heath), and part of that of Nuthurst. Acreage, 9808; population of the civil parish, 1870; of the ecclesiastical, 682. Umberslade is the chief residence. A very large reservoir of the Birmingham and Stratford Canal is here. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; gross value, £454 with residence. Patron, Earl Amherst. The church was restored in 1881. There are Baptist and Congregational chapels at Hockley Heath.
