Titchmarsh or Tichmarsh, Northamptonshire
Historical Description
Titchmarsh or Tichmarsh, a parish, with a village, in Northamptonshire, 2 miles NE of Thrapston, and 1 mile S from Thorpe station on the Northampton and Peterborough branch of the L. & N.W.R. It has a post and money order office under Thrapston; telegraph office, Thrapston. Acreage, 3988; population, 716. The manor, with most of the land, belongs to Lord Lilford. The living is a rectory in The diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £850 with residence. Patron, Lord Lilford. The church is a fine spacious edifice of stone, having some traces of Norman work, but chiefly in the Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with chantry, nave, aisles, N transept, and a beautiful pinnacled western tower. It has some ancient and interesting tombs and monuments, and some good stained windows. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. There are twelve almshouses and several small charities. A grand cedar, believed to be nearly three centuries old, stands in the rectory grounds.
