Historical Description
Kenwyn, a parish in Cornwall. The parish lies partly within Truro borough, is traversed by a rivulet of its own name, and bounded on the E by the rivulet Alien, botli of which fall into the river Fal at Truro, includes the chapelries of St George and St John, and parts of the chapelries of Chace-water, Baldhu, and Mithian. The church is 1 mile NW of Truro town and station on the G.W.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Truro. Acreage, 9200; population of the civil parish, 8495; of the ecclesiastical, 6463. Smelting works are at Calenick and Cavedras. Barrows are on the Downs. The Cornwall Infirmary is within the parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Truro; value, £340 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Truro. The parochial church has been restored and beautified, has a tower, and stands on an eminence commanding an extensive view. There are mission chapels at Idless, Higher Town, Shortlanesend, and Penwetters, and a school chapel at Tre-gavethars. There are also dissenting chapels. By the Parish Councils Act the districts of St John and George were taken from this parish, the remaining portion being divided into two wards, Chacewater and Shortlanesend.
