Houghton, Little, a parish in Northamptonshire, on the river None, 1 mile from Billing Road station on the L. & N.W.R., and 3½ miles E by S from Northampton. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Northampton. Acreage, 1730; population of the civil parish, 504; of the ecclesiastical, with Brafield, 1000. The living is a vicarage, united with the vicarage of Brafield-on-the-Green, in the diocese of Peterborough; joint gross value, £254 with residence. The- church is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style. There is a Wesleyan chape

St. Mary the Virgin (parish church)
The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the chancel is divided from the nave by a carved oak screen, and retains double sedilia and a piscina: the reredos, of stone, and the stained east window were given by the magistrates and gentry of the county, as memorials to William Smyth esq. who died 23rd March, 1872: there are other memorial windows to William Tyler Smyth esq. d. June 1st, 1838, to Mrs. Catherine Smyth, d. Dec. 9, 1868, and to Elizabeth Deacon, d. Feb. 6, 1890: in 1873 the church underwent a thorough restoration at a cost of £3,000, when the south and west galleries were removed, the tower arch opened, two windows inserted in the west wall, the floor relaid, and the interior reseated, an organ chamber and vestry built, and an oak pulpit and lectern introduced: the church affords 370 sittings.
