Kingsthorpe, a village and a parish in Northamptonshire. The village stands near a branch of the river Nen, 1¼ mile N by W of Northampton, is a considerable place, and was formerly governed by a bailiff. It has a post and money order office under Northampton; telegraph office, Northampton. Acreage, 2018; population of civil parish, 7697; of the ecclesiastical, 4178. The manor belonged anciently to the Crown. An hospital was founded in 1200 by Peter de Northampton, and was given by Queen Mary to the master of the Savoy. Some portions of the building are included in the mansion of St David's, the residence of Winifred, Lady Robinson, to whom the manor belongs, and who is chief landowner. Kingsthorpe Hall is a chief residence. There are lime and stone quarries in the parish, and a beautiful freestone of much local celebrity was formerly quarried. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £600 with residence. Patron, St Katherine's Hospital, London. The church is a building of stone in the Norman, Late Decorated, and Perpendicular styles. The parish of St Paul's was formed partly out of this parish in 1877, and that of St Matthew's entirely so in 1893; Kingsthorpe assisting the endowment of the former with 11 acres of glebe land, and the latter with a sum of £1666. There is a Baptist chapel, and also charities worth about £110 a year.
